Academy of Science

Ok! These are 3 things that caught my attention at Academy of Science. Since I used to work at a gallery, I paid a lot of attention on how they set up their exhibit.

1. First thing I noticed is the materials they used to construct their display panels. They use birch plywood on all their panels and the images were either laminated on top or printed straight on it, which enable the panels to be reuse. Plus, most plywood were made from recycled wood, so it is a very eco-friendly material.

2. Second thing I noticed is those beautiful benches in the exhibit. In a closer look, they are made from recycled wood. Those benches were crafted from salvaged Golden Gate Park Montery Cypress tress felled during a storm in 1995-96.

3. The last thing is their mounting system in the exhibit. On their concrete wall, there are few holes on each concrete block. You might think they just using it to decorate the wall, but it is much more than that. They use those holes to mount LCD screens, hang paintings, signs........ I think it is a very smart system because they don't need to build extra walls or stands by doing so, and it save a lot of extra materials.

  2. I also noticed the concrete wall of this building, and I was wondering what are those holes for? I thought they are not for hanging things because I have seen the same thing on other buildings, and those buildings are not museum or something similar to it. So is there anybody can answer that mystery for us?

  3. Are you suggesting / wondering if the holes are there for fabrication needs? I'm not sure, but if so, that would certainly be a happy accident!
