Concept over Craft
Gijs Bakker began his career in jewelry in 1965 but soon began pushing beyond the field's traditional boundaries, venturing into the realms of the conceptual and the radical, and expanding in scale to household appliances, furniture, interiors, and public spaces. In 1993, together with the design critic and historian Renny Ramakers, he cofounded Droog Design, a now-world-famous Dutch brand.
Bakker has worked for Polaroid, Artifort, Castelijn, HEMA, Royal VKB, and recently ENO studio in France. He trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the Konstfack Skolen in Stockholm. He has taught for more than 40 years at the Delft University of Technology and the Design Academy Eindhoven.

Cut and Paste
Saturday. February 28th 7PM
http://cutandpaste.com/events/2009/feb/28/sanfrancisco-2009/
Sunshiney San Francisco wakes up to memories of gold-rushing crazes, rainbow-striped protests, and summers of love. In its long history as a leading city on the Pacific, this old town’s been knocked down more than once—earthquakes and fires, bursting dot-com bubbles—and always gotten back on its feet. Today, the City by the Bay stands tall as a bastion of liberal attitudes, free spirits, and open arms. Hills nestled against lapping waves and streets bustling with geek savants, bon vivants, cosmopolites, and one of the largest creative communities in the world, San Francisco brings its fair share of aesthetic genius to the tournament.
